SPAIN: WATER SHIPPED TO BARCELONA FROM MARSEILLE, TARRAGONA
(ANSAmed) - MADRID, MARCH 17 - The water emergency is
aggravating due to the drought in Barcelona where, as of May 15,
seven tankers will transport water from Marseille, in France,
and Tarragona, to the port of the Catalan city. The supply via
sea was already announced in the past weeks by the regional
Catalan government for next summer, but the scarce resources
made necessary anticipating the operation, according to today's
report of 'La Vanguardia' daily.
The operation will be coordinated by Aguas de Barcelona
(AGBAR), the public company managing the water system, and by
the Port of Barcelona. The seven tankers employed in the water
supply will have a capacity of 28,000 cubic metres each; five
will be used on the route between Tarragona and Barcelona and
two to transport water coming from the Rhone river in southern
France, from Marseille to Barcelona. The arrival of the first
load at the port of the city of Gaudi is scheduled for next May
15.
Last January the regional environmental council extended
until December 2008 the emergency measures, whose costs are
estimated at 1.3 billion euro, adopted in order to face the
consequences of the water crisis caused by the long spell of
drought. With subsequent decrees, the Municipality of Barcelona
has already banned the use of drinking water for irrigation of
gardens, for private swimming pools and for the public fountains
and does not rule out turnover system and limitations of water
supply for civil use in the upcoming summer months. (ANSAmed).
