(ANSAmed) - ROME, JUNE 21 - The Italian government considers the
European summit of June 28-29 ''a chance that Europe must not
let pass by'', said Italy's Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi at the
end of a meeting with ambassadors in Italy of the EU-27 to
illustrate Italy's positions and expectations ahead of the
important European Council deadline.
On the eve of the four-way summit to be held in Rome tomorrow
between the head of the Italian, French, German and Spanish
governments, Terzi underscored to European diplomats that for
Italy it is necessary that alongside the commitment for recovery
in public finance there also be strong growth stimulus - as also
came up at the G20 summit in Los Cabos, which showed a clear
convergence of views between the US and Europe.
It is a line which should be followed also through banking
integration, ever more central to meet the demand coming not
only from markets but also from the public opinion. As for
measures to get out of the economic crisis, Terzi illustrated
the actions taken by the Italian government over the past few
months, and in particular as concerns budgetary measures - with
the introduction of a constitutional amendment on the balancing
of the public budget and the outlook for overall equilibrium in
structural terms in 2013, as well as a primary surplus which
will surpass 5% of GDP in 2014 - for the reform of the most
important sectors of the economy and society for growth and
employment, while at the same time fostering foreign investment.
As concerns current issues in international politics, the minister went over the Italian government's foreign policy priorities, dwelling especially on the need for stronger commitment on the part of Europe to support Arab Spring countries and especially Libya. Giving advance news of the issues on the agenda for meeting of the 27 EU foreign ministers set to take place on Monday in Luxembourg, Terzi confirmed his intention to raise the issue of freedom of religion and the protection of religious minorities, while requesting of Europe - after the extremely serious attacks on Christians in Nigeria - concrete action with specific plans and initiatives, in such an extremely important field as that of fundamental human rights.
