The former president was already sentenced to life in prison in another trial a month ago, for the death of dozens of protesters in Thala, Kasserine e Ouardanine.
At the same trial today, the formerly powerful and widely hated ex-head of security, Ali Seriati, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The former interior minister Rafik Belhaj Kacem received a jail term of 15 years. The ex-head of the national guard, Mohamed Lamine El Abed, faces 10 years of prison. Another former interior minister, Ahmed Friaa, saw the case against him dismissed.
At the reading of the sentence, relatives of many victims protested against the penalties for being overly mild.
