(ANSAMed) - NEW YORK, AUGUST 10 - The US Treasury imposed economic sanctions on the Hezbollah Shiite Lebanese movement, which the US considers a terrorist organization, the Treasury made known in a communique on Friday. The sanctions against Hezbollah, imposed ''for its support of the Syrian government,'' are aimed at preventing any Hezbollah funds from transiting within US jurisdiction. These latest measures follow on other US sanctions against Syria's central bank, companies, and high officials.

''Ever since early 2011, when the Syrian people first began their courageous campaign to demand their universal rights, Hezbollah has provided training, consultants, and ample logistical support to the government's ever more ruthless efforts to combat the opposition,'' the communique said, adding that ''Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah has been supervising the Syrian regime's violent repression against the civilian population.''
