(ANSAMed) - BEIRUT, AUGUST 8 - Syrian rebels are still in control of the Salah ad Din neighborhood in Aleppo, Tawhid Brigade commander, Colonel Abdel Qader Saleh, told the Qatari-financed al-Jazeera TV on Wednesday.

This follows on an earlier rebel announcement that they downed a government MiG jet fighter over Aleppo, which was also reported by al-Jazeera.

A statement made on Syrian state TV earlier today by government forces said they had conquered the Salah ad Din district in a land offensive, killing numerous insurgents, and had broken through rebel strongholds at Bab al Hadid and Bab Nayrab, in the eastern part of the city.

Also on Wednesday, in an unprecedented action in what is a heavily government-controlled area of central Damascus, approximately 100 youth marched opposite the ancient Hijaz railway station, flying ''revolution flags,'' eyewitnesses told ANSA. (ANSAMed).
