(ANSAMed) - BELGRADE, JULY 16 - Serbia wants to become an EU
member and will do everything possible to achieve that end,
President Tomislav Nikolic told Eduard Kukan, chair of the EU
Delegation for Relations with the Balkan nations today.
Serbia will reform its justice system, step up its fight
against corruption and organized crime, and clarify its
privatization procedures, and not only because Europe demands
it, but because it is in Serbia's interests, Nikolic said.
Serbia does not need to await EU acceptance before bringing
itself up to European standards, Nikolic said. Kukan expressed
his support for Serbia's request for a starting date for EU
entry negotiations, the Serbian presidency said in a note.
