Boat with 70 immigrants towed to Lampedusa shore by police

06 July, 12:51

(ANSAmed) - Lampedusa, July 6 - A boat carrying 70 immigrants south of the stepping-stone island of Lampedusa, midway between Sicily and Africa, was towed to shore by Italian police on Friday.

All of the passengers are reported to be in good condition.

The Maltese navy rescued another boat with 84 immigrants in the same area, but where Malta has jurisdiction for international rescue operations.

Lampedusa, which is closer to North Africa than the Italian peninsula, was inundated with migrants following the 2011 war that unseated Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi. (ANSAmed)
