(ANSAMed) - SARAJEVO, JULY 26 - The Balkan nations are now
looking to the future, and the UN will be at their side in
facing the challenges ahead, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
said at an airport press conference as he wrapped up his
week-long mission on Thursday.
''The leaders and citizens of this region can be proud of their achievements so far, but there are still economic, social and political challenges ahead,'' Ban Ki-moon told reporters just before heading to the Olympics opening ceremonies in London.
In what was the first tour by a UN Secretary General of the countries carved out of the former Yugoslavia, Ban Ki-moon last week visited Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, and Macedonia. He ended the tour in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where on Thursday he paid homage to the victims of the July, 1995 Serbian genocide of more than 8,000 Muslim civilians in Srebrenica. Asked by a reporter if the UN would participate in an intervention in Syria, Ban Ki-moon answered that no talks about military intervention are taking place. Both yesterday and today, the secretary general has called on world leaders to put an end to the slaughter in Syria. (ANSAMed).
