(ANSAMed) - BELGRADE, JULY 11 - Adhesion to the EU is a
strategic objective that will bring new development
opportunities for the nation's economy, conservative Serbian
President Tomislav Nikolic said today during a meeting with
Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcollis, whose country
is the current EU president.
Serbia, which has obtained candidate status, is eager to know when negotiations for its adhesion to the EU will begin, Nikolic said.
Serbia is an important country in the Balkans, and negotiations for its EU entry should begin in December, Kozakou-Marcollis, who is on her first foreign mission since Cyprus took over the EU presidency, said. Kozakou-Marcollis also met with her Serbian counterpart, Vuk Jeremic, who will preside the UN General Assembly beginning in September. A Kosovo request for entry into the UN during his presidency will be seen as a provocation, Jeremic said.
''As long as I am president of the UN National Assembly, such a thing could only take place over my dead body,'' Jeremic told reporters after meeting with Kozakou-Marcollis.
Kosovo, whose independence has been recognized by 91 out of 193 UN representatives, is still not a member of the UN. Cyprus is one of 5 EU countries, along with Spain, Greece, Romania and Slovakia, that do not recognize Kosovo. (ANSAMed).
