Unicef: running against the time to save Syrian children

Humanitarian crisis in Jordan, 10 million dollars to be raised

(ANSAmed) - Rome, July 30 - The escalating conflict in Syria had cause an increasing number of children and families fleeing to Jordan. As a consequence, Unicef is increasing its emergency response capacities. Unicef is currently supporting the construction of the new site of Zaatari, around Mafaq, Nord Jordan, in which 5000 Syrian refugees will be hosted next week.

Last night Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs has declared that Jordan has always welcomed Syrian refugees, and there is an historical tradition of hospitality.

Jordan is currently hosting 142.000 Syrian citizens.

The Unicef representative in Jordan, Dominique Hyde, made clear that "an increasing number of children and families are flocking to the southern borders of Jordan" More than a half are children and adolescents who suffered the trauma of violence and displacement.

Unicef plans to raise funds for the amount of 10.7 million dollars. (ANSAmed).
