The commission has "invited" Italy to conform to the EU rules on the matter of public services tenders, once the terms of the current contracts expire, and to respect the principle of non-discrimination among European shipbuilders, says Brussels in a statement.
In particular, the commission says, Italy has "failed to raise" a tender to assign three public contracts to services managed by another three naval companies in Campania, Lazio and Sardinia.
The contracts, the note continues, expired at the end of 2008 and were extended without any tender for the assigning of new contracts. "If Italy does not conform within two months to the measures adopted to ensure the respecting of the EU rules, the Commission will follow up the matter with the EU Court of Justice", Brussels says. The services are run by three companies belonging to the former Tirrenia group: Caremar in Campania, Laziomar and Saremar. (ANSAmed).
