(ANSAMed) - BRUSSELS, JULY 6 - The EU Commission is unable to ascertain whether or not Finmeccanica has violated EU sanctions against Syria, but if this were the case, ''it would be a serious matter, because sanctions only work if all 27 countries apply them,'' an EU spokesperson said today. The comment comes in the wake of yesterday's Wikileaks release of millions of classified emails documenting an ongoing business relationship between Finmeccanica affiliate Selex Elsag and the Assad regime. Finmeccanica yesterday denied violating sanctions, saying that the Tetra communications technology it sold Syria in 2008 was destined for civilian use only. ''It was intended for public safety organizations that operate in civilian emergency and rescue situations,'' the Italian conglomerate said in a note.
''Any other use it may have been put to is out of Selex Elsag's control.'' If the violations were to be proven, national law would apply.
