(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 2 - The European Union and the European Commission have urged the Egyptian authorities to carry out "an independent inquiry" in to yesterday's clashes at a football stadium in Port Said, in which more than 70 people were killed.

"I hope that an immediate and independent inquiry will shed light on the causes of this tragic event," said the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy, Catherine Ashton. Her position was shared by the EU Commissioner for Sport, Androulla Vassiliou, who said that she was "deeply saddened and shocked by the terrible scenes and loss of human life in Port Said". "Like all sports, football can provoke intense passion, but the events that we witnessed in the stadium are absolutely unacceptable," she added. (ANSA).
