(ANSAmed) - MADRID, APRIL 23 - The Mediterranean and its tourist destinations, particularly Greece have been the most sought after for the upcoming season at the International Tourism fair of Catalonia (Sitic) which ended yesterday in the fair area of Parc Montijuic in Barcelona. The organizers have reported the news highlighting the great interest also given by the specialized sectors such as wine-tasting, gastronomic and sports tourism set out in an all new tourist format this year and which became the main subject of the fair.

Spain's traditional holiday spots still hold strong such as the Balearic Islands, Canaries, Andalucia or the Basque region.

New destinations are also on the rise due to the crisis though, as is the case with Catalonia who offers thermal spas, cultural or sport related holidays, from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava, along with Eco and sustainable tourism, rural and wine-tasting trips in the greater producing areas of Penades, Rioja, Jerez and Txacoli.

Among the most visited in the fair by tourist operators, people in the industry and visitors was the Greek stand as confirmed also by Joannis Mitkas, director of communications of the Greek tourist office in Spain. ''We are very satisfied for the quantity and quality of the visitors to our stand who showed interest in our tourist offers'' said Mitkas as quoted by the press.

Catalonia represents the main region from where the 200,000 Greeks who annually visit Greece come from. The operators also say the offers by Morocco and Tunisia have been gaining ground compared to a couple of years ago. The tourist operators for Catalonia itself have foreseen a growth in tourist arrivals of 7% in 2012 compared to 2011 when tourism expenditure was in the range of 11.3 million Euros, and lastly an increase in 2% of holiday reservations.
